For many of Tara's young musicians, the Sheen Family Prize – Performer of the Year represents the pinnacle of their performance journey. More than a competition, it is a long-standing tradition that celebrates artistic excellence while providing students with the invaluable experience of performing at a professional standard before distinguished industry experts and a supportive school community.
Held annually, the Sheen Family Prize has become one of the most prestigious events in Tara's Performing Arts calendar. It reflects the school's commitment to nurturing musical excellence by giving students authentic opportunities to refine their craft, develop confidence on stage and perform challenging repertoire in a concert setting. These experiences are instrumental in preparing students not only for HSC Music performance, but for future study and performance beyond school.

This year's finalists delivered an evening of exceptional musicianship, showcasing the remarkable depth of talent within Tara's Music program. Each performance reflected years of dedicated practice, expert tuition and a genuine passion for music. While every student brought their own artistry and interpretation to the stage, the standard across the evening was outstanding.
Congratulations to Sophie (Year 10), whose captivating performance of Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns earned her the Sheen Family Prize – Performer of the Year 2026. Sophie's performance demonstrated exceptional technical mastery, musical maturity and expressive artistry. Congratulations also to Jasmine (Year 11), who was awarded second place, and Ella (Year 11), who placed third after equally impressive performances.

The significance of the Sheen Family Prize extends well beyond the final concert. Students audition for a place in the finals, embracing a process that demands dedication, resilience and the courage to perform under pressure. Every audition and every performance is an opportunity for growth, helping students build confidence, refine their musicianship and develop the skills required of accomplished performers.

A defining feature of the evening is the opportunity for students to perform before highly respected professional musicians and educators. This year, Tara was honoured to welcome acclaimed musicians DJ Ha and Kayoko Nishiwaki as guest adjudicators. Their thoughtful feedback, industry expertise and encouragement provided students with insights that few school-aged performers have the opportunity to receive. A special highlight of the evening was a captivating guest performance by DJ Ha, inspiring students through the artistry of a professional performer at the highest level.
Events such as the Sheen Family Prize are central to Tara's approach to music education. Alongside outstanding classroom learning and ensemble opportunities, students are encouraged to perform regularly in authentic, high-calibre settings that challenge them to grow as musicians and individuals. These experiences cultivate confidence, discipline, creativity and resilience—qualities that benefit students well beyond the concert hall.

We extend our sincere congratulations to all finalists and every student who auditioned for this year's competition. Their commitment to excellence and willingness to embrace challenge exemplify the vibrant culture of music at Tara.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to Dr Sheen and family, whose longstanding generosity and vision continue to make this remarkable event possible. Through their enduring support of the Performing Arts, generations of Tara students have been inspired to pursue musical excellence, share their talents with confidence and discover the transformative power of performance.
