Aspire Program and Future Problem Solving

Aspire Program and Future Problem Solving

Mr Mark Swainson
Gifted Education Coordinator

Tara Anglican School for Girls' Aspire Academic Program supports students identified as High Potential and High Performing (HPHP) through enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom. The program develops advanced skills across intellectual, creative, social, and physical domains, with an emphasis on independent thinking and real-world application.

Future Problem Solving (FPS) is an enrichment program offered through the Aspire Academic Program that is student-led and coached. Tara participates in the Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) Team division of this competition. This requires students, working in groups of four, to engage with complex, future-focused scenarios and develop structured responses using a six-step problem-solving process: identifying challenges, selecting an underlying problem, generating solutions, establishing evaluation criteria, assessing solutions, and producing a justified action plan. Students may also elect to compete as individuals, completing a modified version of the program.

A supplementary component of Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) is the Action Plan Presentation, in which students present their preferred solution in a structured and persuasive format. Teams must outline implementation, identify key stakeholders, and demonstrate feasibility and impact. Presentations are assessed on clarity, innovation, and effectiveness.

Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) strongly supports key elements of the IB Learner Profile, particularly Thinkers, Inquirers, and Principled learners. Students act as Thinkers by analysing complex systems and evaluating solutions; as Inquirers by researching and questioning emerging global challenges; and as Principled learners by considering ethical, sustainable, and socially responsible outcomes.

Following strong results at the 2025 FPS National Finals, Tara advanced two teams and one individual to the 2026 World Finals, held at Indiana University in the United States. The School also entered five additional students in the Multi-Affiliate Global Issues Competition referred to MAGIC.

The 2026 World Finals topic was Forestry, with a scenario set in Slovenia in 2050 following catastrophic fires that destroyed a UNESCO-listed forest. In response, the government implemented rapid reforestation using bioengineered species alongside technologies such as drones and AI monitoring systems. While intended to accelerate recovery, these approaches led to unintended consequences, including ecological imbalance, invasive growth, infrastructure damage, and declining biodiversity. Students were required to evaluate these challenges and propose sustainable, long-term solutions for effective forest restoration.

Competing against approximately 1,500 students from 12 countries, Tara’s 14-student delegation achieved the following results:

  • 5th Place – Senior Division Global Issues Team: Nicole W, Agatha H, Ella J, and Eden W
  • 1st Place – Senior Division Action Plan Presentation: Nicole W, Agatha H, Ella J, Eden W, and Isabel D
  • 3rd Place – Senior Division Multi-Affiliate Global Issues Competition: Sienna L (along with three international competitors)

These results reflect the strength of the Aspire Program in developing students’ capacity to think critically, collaborate effectively, and engage with complex global issues.

Looking ahead, students will continue their involvement in Term 3 through participation in the FPS qualifying program. As part of this process, students will complete a 2-hour Qualifying Problem under timed conditions, requiring them to independently apply the full six-step problem-solving process to a new and unseen future scenario. This task replicates competition conditions and provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate analytical thinking, creativity, and the ability to construct a coherent, well-justified response within a limited timeframe.

Performance in the Qualifying Problem will determine selection for the National Finals, to be held at Caulfield Grammar School, Melbourne, in October. This stage provides a further opportunity for students to refine their skills and potentially qualify for the 2027 World Finals.

Future Problem Solving United States World Finals Trip

Tara's FPS World Finals trip to the United States comprised 14 students and was led by Dr Isaacs and Mrs Geoghegan. The first five days of the trip consisted of activities in Los Angeles before the group departed for the FPS World Finals held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Here are some reflections on the trip from team members.

Melody, Year 10

What was your favourite moment in Los Angeles?
I loved going to the Hardrock café. Pretty much in the centre of Hollywood where we had classic American burgers for dinner. The Manager was super chill and we all cheered Happy Birthday to a stranger - culture shock that Americans are really nice and Americans don't say Hip Hip [hooray]. Because I yelled "Hip Hip..." right after only with baffled reactions from the restaurant (and laughter the team) as my only response.

What was your highlight of FPS World Finals?
Just the overall community. Everyone was really nice and open to hellos even if it was a strange Aussie complaining about 'Maccas'.

What did you learn about yourself on this trip?
It's better to be open, I feel like I further realised that life really rewards you once you become more open and initiate conversation or even just compliment a stranger, because who knows what great people you could meet or whose day you have just made.

Ashleigh, Year 10

What was your favourite moment in Los Angeles?
My favourite moment in LA was going to Universal Studios. I really enjoyed spending the day walking around with my friends, going on rides, and shopping!

What was your highlight of FPS World Finals?
My highlight of the International Conference was the gift swap on the second day. We got to trade souvenirs with people from all over the world, and my favourite swaps were the pins from different countries and states.

What did you learn about yourself on this trip?
Throughout this trip, I learnt how to travel independently and solve new challenges. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me to meet new people and make new friends.

Olivia, Year 10

What was your favourite moment in Los Angeles?
My favourite moment in Los Angeles was spending time in the hotel with my friends after busy days of sightseeing and competition. Relaxing together, talking, and sharing stories made some of the best memories of the trip.

What was your highlight of FPS World Finals?
My highlight of FPS World Finals was meeting students from all around the world. I enjoyed learning about different cultures, hearing their perspectives, and making connections with people I would never have met otherwise

What did you learn about yourself on this trip?
Other than the fact that I prefer summer over winter I learned that I can step out of my comfort zone and handle unfamiliar situations with more confidence than expected. This trip showed me I can adapt quickly, trust my judgement, and stay functional even when things are unpredictable.

Sienna, Year 11

What was your favourite moment in Los Angeles?
Going around as a big group at Universal Studios, trying all the different rides and foods together.

What was your highlight of FPS World Finals?
Meeting new people through a window, since our windows were facing each other. The New Zealand girls we met were very nice, and we continued to greet each other whenever we saw them. Exchanging our mementos was also really cool.

What did you learn about yourself on this trip?
I really, really like chik-fil-a sauce. Also, I happen to be the most talkative person in a group of silent people.

Sinyee, Year 11

What was your favourite moment in Los Angeles?
My favourite moment in Los Angeles was spending the day at Universal Studios, pushing myself out of my comfort zone by trying out different rides, eating a large variety of food and purchasing souvenirs.

What was your highlight of FPS World Finals?
My highlight in the FPS world finals was meeting people from different countries and competing with them in the MAGIC competition.

What did you learn about yourself on this trip?
I have learnt I should always take risks and embrace all the opportunities provided to me (such as going to the World Finals and trying out very exhilarating rides).

Agatha, Year 11

What was your favourite moment in Los Angeles?
My favourite moment in Los Angeles would be split between visiting the Griffith Observatory where I was able to learn more about constellations and space, and the time spent in Universal Studios with my friends.

What was your highlight of FPS World Finals?
My highlight of the World Finals would be the time spent crafting our Action Plan Presentation with my team because we got to spend time learning more about each other and have fun whilst creating.

What did you learn about yourself this trip?
I learnt that I enjoy socialising and meeting with new people as I made a lot of new friends from new countries and I also realised I adore home-cooked food a lot.

Nicole, Year 11

What was your favourite moment in Los Angeles?
My favourite moment in Los Angeles was going to Universal Studios, because we were able to just relax, enjoy the rides, and also get a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes of film production on the Studio Tour.

What was your highlight of FPS World Finals?
My highlight of FPS World Finals was preparing and planning for our Action Plan Presentation: it was really fun working with my team to create the presentation, and it was amazing to have our hard work pay off in the end as well.

What did you learn about yourself on this trip?
I learnt that I really enjoy collaborative, team-based competitions like FPS, and also that I should build better spending habits (especially when it comes to clothes and Chick-fil-A sauce).

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our entire school community for making Winterfest 2026 such a wonderful and memorable event. It was an extraordinary afternoon and evening that truly showcased the spirit, generosity and energy of Tara.

From the moment the gates opened, the school came alive with colour, excitement and community connection. None of this would have been possible without the incredible efforts of our students, families, staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to bring the event to life. Each year group brought their creativity and enthusiasm to life through a range of uniquely designed stalls, offering everything from games and treats to activities that delighted guests of all ages. Your imagination, teamwork and dedication helped create a vibrant festival atmosphere that was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

We are deeply grateful to our many parent and carer volunteers who gave their time so generously before, during and after the event. Inspiring Our Students: Welcoming Back Kahlie Sleiman (Class of 2011)

Inspiring Our Students: Welcoming Back Kahlie Sleiman (Class of 2011)

It was a pleasure to welcome Tara alumna Kahlie Sleiman (née Taouk), from the Class of 2011, back to the School as the guest speaker at our recent Awards Assembly.

A former Walker House Captain who joined Tara in Year 5, Kahlie reflected on the many opportunities she embraced during her time at Tara, including rowing, musicals, Saturday sport and Tara Skiing. She encouraged our students to think beyond titles and achievements, reminding them that success is measured through lifelong learning, service to others, living with integrity and empowering those around them.

Kahlie also spoke of the teachers and mentors who supported and challenged her throughout her Tara journey, inspiring our students to make the most of every opportunity and believe in their own potential.

We sincerely thank Kahlie for returning to Tara to share her experiences and inspire the next generation of Tara girls.

Illuminate Festival

The Junior School Library recently came alive with creativity as students showcased their work as part of Illuminate – Tara's Festival for Writers and Illustrators .

Throughout the term, students from Years 2–6 participated in a range of writing and illustrating opportunities, including WriteOn , the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards , and Tara's own Picture This! competition. Inspired by the theme Little People, Big Adventures , students produced an impressive collection of stories, poems and illustrated book covers.

The festival celebrated the creativity, imagination and communication skills of our students, while providing them with an authentic audience for their work. A highlight was the exhibition in the Junior School Library, where students shared their creations with peers, staff and families, and participated in Tara's People's Choice Awards.

Congratulations to all students who contributed to Illuminate. The quality of work on display was exceptional and reflected the enthusiasm and talent of Tara's young writers and illustrators.

Year 5 Welcomes Dr Grover

Year 5 Welcomes Dr Grover

As part of their Who We Are Inquiry Unit, Year 5 welcomed Tara parent Dr Grover, who shared his expertise as a cardiologist. Students learnt about the important role the heart plays in pumping oxygen-rich blood throughout the body and explored how healthy habits, such as regular exercise and a balanced diet, help keep our hearts strong.

Dr Grover also gave students an insight into a day in the life of a doctor, explaining how teams of interns, registrars, medical students and senior doctors work together to care for patients. The visit provided a valuable real-world connection to the unit's exploration of how our body's systems work together to support our overall wellbeing.

Thank you, Dr Grover, for sharing your time and expertise with Year 5.

Year 2 Visit Taronga Zoo

Year 2 Visit Taronga Zoo

Year 2 recently enjoyed an exciting day at Taronga Zoo as part of their Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry. Through their learning, students have been exploring the Central Idea: Growth and change can be measured .

The excursion gave students the opportunity to observe a wide range of animals and learn about how living things grow, change and move through different stages of their life cycles. Students investigated different habitats, identified features shared by animals and discussed how species adapt to their environments.

Throughout the day, students practised their observation skills and gathered information about animals through discussions, photographs and note-taking. They also learned about conservation and explored how scientists use evidence to understand animals, habitats and changes in the natural world over time.

The visit helped bring classroom learning to life and encouraged students to ask questions, make connections and deepen their understanding of the living world around them.

Water in the World - Geography Food Creations

Water in the World - Geography Food Creations

Anika S, Year 8

This term in Year 8 Geography, we have been studying the unit Water in the World. Throughout the term, we have participated in a range of engaging and immersive activities that have helped us understand why Geography matters.

Throughout our learning, we discovered that Geography is not just a subject studied in the classroom, but it is all around us, shaping the way we live and interact with the natural world we live in. We explored the importance of water, its impact on people through natural disasters and "Why Geography MATTERS" as a whole.

To celebrate the end of the unit, our class held a Geography themed party with a creative twist. Rather than just bringing snacks to share, as a class we created the idea of “Geography on a Plate”. In which we crafted and created an impressive array of food creations inspired by animals and key geographical themes. Some creations included watermelon sharks, kiwi turtles, penguin biomes and many more imaginative designs.

The activity was a great way to wrap up the unit, allowing us to showcase both our creativity and our learning. We have thoroughly enjoyed Geography with our teachers and are grateful for the engaging experiences that have made learning both meaningful and memorable.

The event was organised as part of Year 10's ongoing commitment to supporting Parramatta Women's Shelter, a longstanding partner of Tara that provides safe accommodation, support services and pathways to independence for women and children experiencing homelessness and domestic violence.

Thanks to the generosity of students and families, the Movie Night raised over $600, helping to support the vital work of the shelter within the local community.

Congratulations to all Year 10 students who attended and contributed to the success of the evening. The event was a wonderful example of compassion, community spirit and service in action.

Year 12 Biology - STEM Reactor Incursion

Diba and Selassie
Year 12 Biology

On Friday, 19 June, our Year 12 Biology classes had the exciting opportunity to participate in a STEM Reactor incursion, where we genetically modified E. coli bacteria to make them glow. During the session, we learned about gene expression and how the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), originally derived from jellyfish, can be inserted into E. coli using a small piece of DNA called a plasmid. In the lab, we were introduced to the “heat shock” process, which involved rapidly cooling and heating our samples to allow the bacteria to absorb the surrounding genetic material. This was an exciting and valuable incursion that taught the Biology students more about genetic engineering and its real world applications.
