From the Director of Boarding
Boarding Expo - Dubbo
An important part of the Boarding calendar each year is our attendance at the Boarding Schools Expo in Dubbo as it provides us with the opportunity to showcase our School to regional and rural families. Thirty five schools are represented at the Expo over two days, allowing families to get a sense of what each school has to offer. Finding the right boarding school is a complex and emotional task and families have many aspects to consider before making this crucial decision, so the conversations are important. COVID saw the 2020 Expo cancelled, it was wonderful to be able to attend again this year and meet such a range of fabulous girls from all areas of NSW who are keen to experience all that Tara has to offer.
Principal Mrs Susan Middlebrook flew from Sydney and was able to attend the Expo on Friday afternoon before joining Registrar Cilla Walker, and myself at a dinner at the Old Bank Restaurant for current, past and future families. The food and company were magnificent, and it was special to spend time socialising with our families whom we do not often get to see in person. The real highlight of the Expo for me, however, was seeing our current families talking to prospective families with such passion about the experiences their own girls are living and the opportunities that Tara is providing.
This year we will also be attending the Narrabri Expo on 23-24 July.
Each year in May following the Expo, boarding schools across Australia commemorate National Boarding Week. This is an initiative started by the Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA) to celebrate boarding life, our wonderful boarders and our staff.
Our boarders spent the weekend making decorations to adorn the school in the boarding house colours, which we hope was a nice surprise for everyone when they arrived at Tara this morning. The boarders and kitchen staff will also stand out this week with their pink hair ribbons and caps. A variety of activities have been planned by our Head Boarder, Grace R, and Deputy Head Boarder, Sophie G, including the boarding assembly on Tuesday where the girls will debunk some of the common myths often asked about boarding while touring the house. Thursday there will be a sausage sizzle to raise money for the Vanessa Grant Trust, a foundation the boarding house has supported for many years, along with a friendly Newcombe Ball competition.
Boarding is such a unique experience for all involved. The sense of community and sacrifice is enormous, one that deserves to be celebrated in style!

Before and After School Care News
The month of April flew by at Before and After School Care, with activities celebrating Cultural diversity, Earth Day, establishment of our new garden and experimenting with different artforms. We created a cultural diversity wall at our centre and have been learning about the variety of backgrounds and cultures that are at After School Care, celebrating and exploring different traditions and foods.
Earth day involved creating an art-piece using food-dye and milk, recreating what the Earth looks like to us, alongside a discussion about our environmental footprint. From this discussion we created goals of establishing a vegetable and herb garden, and this has been incredibly exciting to watch grow and change during the month. Our other goal was to include more recycled materials into our artwork, which we did as a group by creating rainbow fish out of bottlecaps. We are excited to continue implementing and achieving our goals!

Year 8 Geography Fieldtrip
Janavika H - Year 8
On 3 May, Year 8 Geography students went to Manly Dam to investigate for their upcoming assessment on Water in the World. This was vital for us to learn about because it gave us an insight as to how water can be managed. Using the MYP framework, we had to become Environmental Officers and think outside the box and come up with our own inquiry question we would investigate for the Northern Beaches Council. We became inquisitive learners with real-life scenarios.
We revised previous knowledge learned about water in Science to expand our understanding in Geography of the human impacts on water. We were taught about and walked through some of the catchment area of Manly Dam, and how its urban surroundings and recreational use could affect the water quality. We could see the impacts of a built environment on runoff. Nearby recreations like the Wakehurst Golf Course could also pollute the water, because to maintain a golf course they need use many chemicals like fertilizers, pesticides, and glyphosate which enter the nearby creeks on a rainy day and contaminate the water. As Environmental Officers, Year 8 learnt to test the turbidity of the water using a turbidity tube. We also tested the pH levels of the water and soil using drops of universal indicator. This told us if the water was acidic, neutral, or alkaline.
Highlights of the day included looking for indicator animal species in Manly Creek and the golf course creek to determine the health of the creek and seeing how tolerant they were, looking at eighty-three engravings that the Cammeraygal people made and eating lunch by Manly Dam.
History Debating Update
Evelyn J - History Debating Captain
On Friday 7 May, Year 10 Tara A, participated in a History Debating Day, in which they competed against Northholm Grammar, Sefton High School and Winmalee High School. Thankfully, due to reducing COVID restrictions, the debates were able to be held face-to-face, which allowed for a day filled with friendly competition, socialising and fun!
During the day, they debated topics including “That the dropping of the atomic bomb in WWII was justified” and “That the USSR won the space race”.
Year 10 Tara A won all three of their debates, and finished the day with success! Congratulations to Hannah W, Ashley K, Alisha V, and Alisha G.
"It was an immensely enjoyable experience and during the debates it was fascinating to see how everyone approached the topics from varied viewpoints and brought up different matter." - Hannah W
Year 10 Tara B also participated in two debates on the 4 May, and achieved huge success in their debate against Northholm Grammar. Consisting of Faith W, Olivia D, Siya P, and Imogen B, the team was motivated to research their assigned topic in depth, bringing strong historiography and manner to the debate.
Both teams worked really hard to anticipate the nature of the real debate, so we congratulate them both for their efforts.
Best of luck to Year 10 Teams in their future debates!
With Year 11 debates coming up in the next few weeks as well, wishing them all the best too!

Olympics Unleased David McKeon Visit
David McKeon will be connecting with Year 9 students on Tuesday 25 May as part of Olympics Unleashed, presented by Optus.
The students will learn from David’s Olympic journey how to build resilience, the importance of setting goals and how to find what you are passionate about.
Students will hear firsthand from David about how they overcame challenges to compete in their chosen sport at the very highest level, and how some lessons they’ve learned in sport can help students to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends.
Prefect Afternoon Tea
Olivia L - Academic Prefect Year 12
On Wednesday 5 March, the Tara Leadership Team held a Prefect Afternoon Tea, hosting prefects from 16 schools all over Sydney, including but not limited to The King’s School, Knox Grammar, PLC and James Ruse, in addition to all 22 of Tara’s own student leadership team.
All 60 prefects were able to participate in group discussion and a number of fun teamwork games such as Human Connect 5, developing valuable connections to students from various schools from different areas of Sydney.
The event was a great success, with many guests stating that it was one of the most enjoyable Prefect Afternoon Teas they had attended so far. We would also like to extend a massive thank you to Mrs Losco for supervising on the night, to Tony Griffiths for providing delicious catering as usual, and to the Year 12 hospitality girls for helping out on the night!
Mother's Day - Year 7 SRC
On Thursday 6 May, the Year 7 SRC utilised the Thursday Lunch with Leaders initiative in order to hold a miniature stall selling beautiful Mother's Day cookies, wrapped up in order to be given as a gift. The turnout was wonderful and the Year 7 SRC got to showcase their true leadership skills, while also building upon them, through the advertisement and sale of the cookies. There was also a station where girls could write a message to their mothers or any important women in their lives, either to deliver personally or to pin up for the school community to see how each Tara girl values the women in her life. The event was centred on the School value of Affirmation, and we believe that this event reminded girls to show gratitude and affirm the important women in their lives.
Online da Vinci Decathlon
Evelyn J - Year 11
The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition that is designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of high school students. Based on Leonardo da Vinci's determination to uncover the unknown, students from all over Australia were encouraged to showcase higher level thinking in English, Maths, Ideation, Engineering, Art and Poetry, Science, Creative Producers, Cartography, Code Breaking and Legacy. This year, with the theme of Chance, the Year 7-8 Decathlon was held 4 May, and the Year 9-11 Decathlon was held 5 May, run by Knox Grammar School. While Decathlon’s are usually hosted by Knox Grammar School, due to COVID-19, the Decathlon was held online, and involved a meeting of 100+ schools, all on Zoom. This gave us the opportunity to compete against schools from other states, that would not usually be able to compete due to the geographical distance. While it was extremely different to the norm, it was still a day filled with fun and academic challenge.
After the initial meeting on Zoom, groups of schools were separated into breakout rooms, with Knox Old Boys hosting each room. They directed each session, and as a result of their hard work, all schools completed and submitted their work on time, to the best of their efforts. As a result of taking part in the Decathlon, we learnt, and enhanced a variety of skills, including teamwork, and creative thinking, and reflective of the online environment, collaboration and media literacy skills. A highlight from the afternoon was Creative Producers, in which teams took part in a drama performance, addressing the stimulus reminiscent of the classic philosophical dilemma of the ‘trolley problem'. This required us to display quick thinking, and teamwork skills, planning, performing and filming the performance on the iPads in 20 minutes. A special thank you to Ms Mann, as we applied the skills we had learnt in our practice sessions, allowing for a better, and more cohesive outcome. Thank you also to Ms Ngui, and Mrs Westerbrink who enhanced our communication, critical thinking and organisational skills, enabling us to feel more cohesive as a team. Finally, a huge thank you to Miss Brown, for running the event at Tara, and ensuring each team had a fantastic time competing and strengthening our approaches to learning.
Overall, the Da Vinci Decathlon of 2021 was an extremely enjoyable and rewarding time, which has without a doubt equipped us with skills that will stay with us in the future.
RESULTS
Congratulations to the Year 9 and 10 teams who placed first in Code Breaking! This is an excellent result as there were over 100 schools competing each day – more than in previous years due to the online format.
Other results included:
Year 7 – 5th in Code Breaking
Year 8 – 5th in Creative Producers and equal 4th in Engineering
Year 9 – 5th in Creative Producers
Year 10 – 4th in English
Japanese News - Years 7 - 10
Year 7 has enthusiastically embraced their Japanese studies this year and had lots of fun learning the hiragana script. The girls have learnt that Japanese consists of three written scripts and that they are not just a means of communication, but also a thing of beauty.
Year 8 began the year exploring how a purpose of tourism is to facilitate an understanding of culture in different contexts. They researched a variety of Japanese cities and presented their chosen city at an expo, persuading people to visit their city using their Japanese language skills. The two Year 8 Japanese classes collaborated on the expo and created a wonderful learning experience for each other. The expo booths included posters, origami, local food delicacies as well as digital presentations. It was definitely a highlight of the term.
Year 8 also had lots of fun doing calligraphy. Not only is it a fun way to study and learn new kanji, but as they discovered, it is a great way to calm and focus the mind.
Year 9 has been investigating school life in Japan and exploring the differences and similarities with their own school experience. They have participated in a Japanese style sports carnival as well as a video exchange with our sister school in Japan. Our Japanese sister school requested videos about our cafeteria, library and club activities and so the girls have been busy writing their scripts in Japanese and planning their short films.
Year 10 began the year considering how a purpose of reflecting on personal experience is to better understand our connections to our past. The girls shared their childhood memories and baby photos, as well as significant milestones. There was much laughter and discussion around how these might be shaped by such things as family and culture. An activity that the girls particularly enjoyed was considering the significant milestones of people that they admire and creating posters about them. Many of the girls commented on how proud they felt being able to write at this level in Japanese. Here is a sample of their writing.
