At Tara Junior School, we believe in the power of service learning to make a positive impact in the world. Each term, we organise a Service Learning Day to raise awareness about important issues and find ways to serve others. Guided by our service learning slogan, "Service for others - hearts and minds in action," we aim to embody the values of love and compassion that God teaches us. In this article, we will highlight our recent Service Learning Day, where the Waugh House Team joined forces to support the Kids with Cancer Foundation and their incredible work with Wigs 4 Kids.
The Kids with Cancer Foundation is a charity that focuses on various aspects of cancer care. They support cancer research initiatives, fund capital works and cancer wards/centers, and provide financial aid to families with children fighting cancer. One remarkable initiative of the foundation is the creation of wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment using donated hair. They also provide care packs and resources for children in hospitals, bringing smiles to their faces during challenging times.
On Friday, May 26, our Junior School girls participated in various activities to support the Kids with Cancer Foundation. To raise funds, they had the privilege of wearing crazy hairstyles by making a donation. Additionally, our students showcased their creativity by making beautiful cards with uplifting messages for children in hospitals battling cancer. Moreover, we witnessed true acts of courage, as 12 brave girls volunteered to donate 20cm of their hair to be used in making wigs for children.
To honour the girls' commitment, two professional hairdressers joined us in the Junior School Hall. Amidst the cheerful atmosphere, they carefully cut the hair of the brave volunteers. During this time, Rachele and Vanessa from the Kids with Cancer Foundation shared insights into their inspiring work. Their words resonated with our students, deepening their understanding and compassion for children fighting cancer.
Thanks to the generosity of our Junior School girls and the support from our community, we raised a total of $1,000 on the Service Learning Day. In addition to the monetary contribution, some of the students who donated their hair set up individual fundraising pages on the Wigs 4 Kids website. Together, they raised a considerable amount of money for this worthwhile charity, further amplifying the impact of their contribution.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the girls of the Waugh House Team for their creative ideas and strong support for one another in preparing for the Service Learning Day. The visitors from the Kids with Cancer Foundation were deeply touched by the enthusiasm and compassion displayed by Tara students and teachers alike. It is through such acts of kindness that we strive to make a difference in the lives of others and spread love in our community.
The Service Learning Day at Tara Junior School served as a platform for our students to actively engage in service and demonstrate their commitment to making the world a better place. By supporting the Kids with Cancer Foundation and Wigs 4 Kids, our students showcased their empathy, bravery, and dedication to serving others. We are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to future initiatives that will continue to shape them into compassionate and responsible global citizens.
