Primary Years Programme Exhibition 2024
Ms Holly Boardman - Dean of Learning (E-6)
The Tara Junior School Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition was held on Thursday 24 October, celebrating the culmination of each student's journey through the International Baccalaureate PYP. This year’s Exhibition marked a significant milestone, through which our Year 6 students engaged in inquiries that highlighted their commitment to making a positive impact in the local community and beyond.
The central idea for Exhibition 2024 was: "Through small actions, everyone can make a difference"
This central idea guided the students as they explored issues of local and personal significance. Each student identified pressing topics that resonated with their passions and concerns, allowing them to formulate lines of inquiry focused on issues they deeply care about and believe they can influence.
To direct their inquiries, the girls crafted research questions, drawing on support from teachers and mentors. They engaged with diverse resources, designed surveys, conducted interviews, and connected with community members, enhancing their understanding and fostering relationships that enriched their projects. Strong connections to our local community were extremely valuable as local experts were invited to share their knowledge and support the students. Their contributions not only enhanced the learning experience but also highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving change.
As the students synthesised their findings, they articulated their insights and demonstrated how their understanding of their chosen issues evolved. This process deepened their knowledge and reinforced their ability to communicate effectively.
With their research complete, the girls took meaningful action to share their learning with the Tara community. Students used various mediums such as artwork, interactive displays, campaigns, and digital projects. Their work illustrated not only their understanding of the issues but also their visions for positive change.
Reflection was woven throughout the inquiry process. Regular mentor meetings allowed students to assess their progress and adjust their plans. Through reflective journaling, they represented their strengths, identified areas for growth, and addressed unresolved questions. The culmination of their efforts was showcased in a Learning Map, visually documenting their journeys and insights.
A heartfelt thank you to Miss MacAskill, Mrs Snelson, Miss Dos Santos, and all the dedicated teachers and mentors who guided our students through Exhibition 2024. Your expertise, patience, and commitment were instrumental in shaping this experience.
Congratulations to our Year 6 girls! Your courage, creativity, and collaborative spirit made this year’s PYP Exhibition a testament to the power of student agency and community support. Together, you have demonstrated that small change really can have a big impact.

Crawford Service Learning Day
Annie and Simren - Crawford Heads of House
On 6 September Crawford had the Service Learning Day. This year we decided to do a cupcake design competition to support our sponsor child Martha.
Martha lives with her mother in Mexico. She celebrated her 13th birthday on 22 September. Each year, we receive letters and photographs from Martha. We love reading them and learning more about her and her life in Mexico.
The week before Crawford Service Learning Day all girls in Junior School got to design a cupcake, we then collected all the submissions from the classes to select a winner from each class. In order to submit a design a gold coin was needed so that we could purchase a birthday gift for Martha. On Service Learning Day, Tara girls wore hair accessories in the colours of the Mexican flag (red, white and green). Each girl brought in another gold coin to support and help Martha and her family. When the winners were finally selected (it was very hard according to our judges) each winner got to take home a cupcake.
Additionally, every class made a card or wrote a letter to Martha wishing her a Happy Birthday and thanking her for the letter she wrote us. As well as writing her letters and cards, Miss Bowden kindly brought in balloons to hang up in turning circle as well as other decorations to celebrate Martha’s Birthday.
Crawford raised $450 dollars in total and a few girls even got to walk home with a cupcake. On behalf of the Crawford House Team, I would like to thank all the work and effort everyone put in to make this day happen and a special thanks to Miss Bowden our house patron.

ELC and Kindergarten’s Exciting Excursion to The Gruffalo!
Our Early Learning Centre (ELC) and Kindergarten students have spent the year immersed in imaginative storytelling, discovering the many ways stories can be shared. To build on this learning, we kicked off Term 4 with a special outing to see The Gruffalo stage show, based on the beloved book by Julia Donaldson.
The adventure began with a bus ride to the theatre, sparking excitement as the girls took in the sights along the way. After the engaging performance, we enjoyed lunch and playtime together in a nearby park before returning to school. Here are some of the girls’ reflections on their memorable day:
ELC:

- I like the bus because it took us to the Gruffalo Show. I also liked the Gruffalo because he was funny – Effie
- I liked when the fox was pulling the mouses tail – Amiya
- My favourite was the mouse. She was playing tricks with every animal – Rachel
- I like the Gruffalo and the dancing snake – Valentina
- My favourite thing was playing at the park – Ava
- The swing is my favourite because it goes very high – Ada
Kindergarten:
- I liked watching the Gruffalo. My favourite character was Snake because he was very funny – Grace
- I liked Fox in The Gruffalo because he was singing a silly song – Aimee
- My favourite thing was going on the zipline because it went very fast – Ira
- I liked it when Mrs Cha and Mrs Schultz went on the flying fox at the same time - Nicole
- I liked it when my friend and I were spinning the ELC girls around on the round-a-bout – Isla.
- My favourite was sitting on the bus with Mrs Schultz on the way home. She gave me a peppermint – Souly

Year 11 Legal Studies Excursion
Angelina H - Year 11 Legal Studies Student
At the end of Term 3, Year 11 Legal Studies were fortunate enough to visit the Downing Centre courts in the city. In the morning we heard from Judge Cole who told us about her journey in law to becoming a judge and some cases that have resonated with her through the years. Following this we had the incredible opportunity to enter different court rooms and understand how court proceedings work in real life, taking what we had learned in the classroom to real situations. My friends and I went into many courts rooms and saw many cases including a judge giving his verdict on a domestic violence crime, individuals presenting their sides of the story in the witness box, many CCTV footage of incidents occurring and how the judge deals with many matters of minor civil disputes quickly. As a whole we saw how discretion and the rule of law is applied through every case, keeping the law fair for victims, offenders and society. Overall this was such an amazing experience and one we will never forget!
Ration the Fashion
Popi T and Mr Swainson - Environmental Committee
Ration the Fashion was held on Monday 9 September. It was hosted by the Environmental Committee with an aim of encouraging a reduction in the consumption of ‘fast fashion’ clothes.
On the day students swapped clothes with friends, borrowed clothes from family and/or purchased thrifted clothes from opshops.
Students were also given the opportunity to recycle unwanted clothing items through an organisation called Upparel. Upparel will pass these garments onto their charity partners. For those items in a poor state, Upparel will repurpose them into a new fabric. Tara students responded by bring 20kg of unwanted clothing for recycling. Most importantly, none of these garments went to landfill.
To encourage girls to participate in Ration the Fashion, a competition was held and the winners are mentioned below.
Category 1 – Best Clothes Swap Between Friends
Joint winner – Elsa and Tina - Year 7
Our outfit was purchased from MustardSeed Op Shop and we both bought matching tops and matching pants. The tops were knitted with yarn, and we paired them with matching cargo pants.
Joint winner – Liz, Meghann, Eliza, Mrs Heaton and Mrs Mischkonigg - Year 12 and Staff
We decided to swap with the PDHPE staff for the day. We wore their uniforms, and they wore our Year 12 jerseys. We also made a short film about a day in their lives.
Runner up – Diya and Claire - Year 11
Our outfit inspiration was from our dads, we borrowed their black shorts, black polo, shoes and their hats to recreate a miniature version of them. We wanted to wear their old clothes that they wore as teenagers to give off a 2000's boy vibe. We loved how the outfits came together and we felt very retro like our dads would've felt back in the day. We are so happy we got runners up!
Category 2 – Best Thrifted Outfit
Winner – Isabella - Year 7
My outfit is hand painted by me, I was originally going to throw it in the bin because I got a massive stain on it. Then I thought of the idea to paint it, I love wolves and space, so why not paint them together. I got super dirty and with the paint and overall, the project was super successful.
Runner up – Ms Patton
Complete thrifted outfit from top to bottom. I love getting bargains from my favourite thrift stores and FB market place – Its good for me and good for the environment. The top $17 and the Pants $24 from Lifeline Opshop and Birkenstocks $30 FB marketplace

Defensively, the team applied consistent pressure, ensuring every opponent was closely marked, while offensively, they capitalised on their chances, driving aggressively towards the basket. Cleo F was pivotal in the defensive setup, often initiating fast breaks and transitioning the ball smoothly down the court. Agatha H earned recognition for her relentless hustle; her ability to force turnovers and her tenacity in 50-50 situations stood out, exemplifying the kind of grit that defines this team. If there were an award for the hardest worker on the floor, it would undoubtedly go to her. Joyce L, despite playing through an injury, remained a defensive anchor, consistently contesting shots and locking down her assignments. Her resilience had a notable impact. Syna L was crucial in organising the defensive coverage, ensuring the team maintained its structure while also driving hard on offence to create scoring opportunities. Chloe T came through under pressure, knocking down two crucial free throws and positioning herself smartly throughout the game, contributing not only in scoring but also in ball movement. Claire L played a strong defensive game, using her positioning well to prevent the opposition from making clean passes. Justine W was instrumental in pushing the pace, skilfully navigating through defenders and creating opportunities for herself and her teammates in transition. The game ended with a well-deserved 21-12 victory. Tara's cohesive effort, relentless defence, and intelligent offensive plays were key factors in securing the win, setting the stage for their upcoming final.
In the semi-final match against Kincoppal Rose Bay, Tara 3 put on a dynamic display of teamwork and skill. Amy and Janette from Year 8 worked tirelessly to apply defensive pressure, disrupting Kincoppal’s rhythm. Wynne and Akshraa (Year 9) were instrumental in controlling the boards, securing multiple rebounds that helped the team maintain possession and build momentum. The team was guided and encouraged by their coach, Sarah, whose leadership and motivation played a key role in their performance. Nikki played a crucial role in finishing off plays, delivering a series of composed and accurate shots that significantly boosted Tara's score, culminating in a well-earned 21-7 victory. Tara 2 Hockey had an amazing Round 8 game. Our defence started off strong, with our sweeper Navya S and goalie Charlie W giving it their all. Our midfield was also powerful, with Avika G ensuring we kept the ball down at our end of the field. Although we ended up losing 0-3 to Brigidine College, the team has come a long way since the start of the season, and I am so proud of everyone on the team. – Aarya R Tara 2 Hockey

The Senior Seconds ended the season with a tough match against Brigidine, finishing with a 7-24 loss. Despite a strong start, where the team took the lead in the first quarter, the girls struggled to maintain momentum in the second, and by the end, the team couldn't keep up with their scoring. However, the team showed determination throughout, going for every rebound and intercept until the final whistle. The girls enjoyed their season and are extremely happy with their results over the past few games!
Tara fourths weekend’s semi-final match against PLC was both fun and intense. Claire C stood out with her excellent shooting, while Jessica K contributed with numerous assists as GA and scored several goals herself. The whole team performed brilliantly, and we were thrilled to secure the win, advancing us to the finals. We’re excited and hopeful for another victory.
