Term 1, Week 9, 2020
From the Director of Boarding
Boarding at Tara
Samantha Cocks - Director of Boarding
What a start to the year it has been at Eggleton House! We welcomed our new Principal, Mrs Ramsay, and new Assistant Head of Boarding, Ms Small, to the Tara Boarding Community. It has been wonderful having Mrs Ramsay visit the boarding house regularly for dinner to get to know all the boarders in a relaxed setting. Ms Small comes with a wealth of experience, is a qualified teacher, currently teaching Year 7 Christian Studies at Tara, and has vast experience in boarding. She joined us in Week 3 and was given the challenge of knowing all the boarder’s names by after camp (Week 6), which she achieved with flying colours. I must say, so did Mrs Ramsay.
At the start of the year, we welcomed ten new boarders to Eggleton House. They have all joined the community with enthusiasm and have settled in beautifully. Our new boarders come from Sydney, rural NSW, and overseas. Eggleton House is full of happy chatter and vibrance. Our Head Boarder, Charli, is leading the girls brilliantly and has done a superb job of integrating everyone.
The focus for the term has been on engagement and opportunity. All the boarders received an Eggleton House tote bag to carry their items to the many activities and events they have joined up to. The Tara pool and gym have been a great way to relax after a busy day at School for the boarders. During our wellbeing sessions we have looked at procrastination strategies and organisation techniques to ensure that the boarders are able to achieve as much as they can each term. To engage with each other they participated in a challenge that had them interacting with fellow boarders, the Principal and teachers as well as self care tasks and overcoming a personal challenge. Congratulations to Amelia in Year 7 who won this challenge and received two tickets to Laser Tag for her effort.
There were many highlights from Term 1. Our annual Welcome Dinner was a fantastic time to get to know new parents and guardians whilst catching up with news from the long summer break. We had around 100 people attend and there were comments from parents asking if they could stay and board too. Thanks to Albert, our chef, for the magnificent food! Our In Weekend was a special time to get to know all the new boarders. Thankfully it was a beautiful weekend, so we were able to go to Raging Waters Sydney (Prospect), enjoy food together and get to know each other.
We have celebrated Chinese New Year, (G)alentines Day, International Women’s Day and Easter during the term. The day girl vs boarding relay at the swimming carnival had a nail biting finish but unfortunately the boarders weren’t successful this year. The girls have also participated in some exciting weekend activities including a visit to the Ramses exhibition, shopping and the movies. Boarders were also invited to dinner at Kings before seeing the dress rehearsal of the Tara/King's production of ‘Jersey Boys’.
Plans are now underway for National Boarding Week which will be held in Term 2. We will hold a BBQ and bake sale fundraiser to raise money for ‘The Vanessa Grant Girls’ Boarding School’ in East Kenya. As the weather gets colder, we also look forward to our ‘My Kitchen Rules’ competition where groups cook for the house, their meals are rated, with the highest scoring team winning an outing of their choice.
I would like to thank my dedicated team for all the care and enthusiasm they bring to looking after the boarders. They say it takes a village to raise a child and Eggleton House certainly is an amazing village that I am proud to be part of.

Walker’s Service Learning Day
Mrs Amy McAlpine - House Patron and Walker House Captains - Ada Z and Amalia H
Today, we're going to talk about something really special that happened recently - Walker's Service Learning Day in support of Orange Sky Australia!
Firstly, let's understand what Orange Sky Australia is all about. It's a fantastic organisation that helps people experiencing homelessness in Australia. They do this by providing free mobile laundry and shower services. Imagine not having clean clothes or access to a shower when you need it! Orange Sky's volunteers are like superheroes, making sure that those in need can stay clean and have basic necessities taken care of.
Now, let's talk numbers. Thanks to all of you amazing students and teachers at Walker, we raised an incredible $600.00 for Orange Sky Australia! That's a big deal because this money will go directly to keeping their vans running, their washing machines and dryers working, and their showers available for those who need them.
So, what did we do on Walker's Service Learning Day? Well, we didn't just raise money; we also learned a lot and had fun doing it!
We engaged in conversations about homeliness ,we watched inspiring videos about Orange Sky Australia and even took quizzes to test our knowledge.
In conclusion, Walker's Service Learning Day was a fantastic experience where we learned, had fun, and most importantly, made a positive impact on our community by supporting Orange Sky Australia.
Let's continue to be Girls of Action and make the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time!
Around the World in Year 4
Eden-Grace and Natalyia - 4 Zadie
The global explorers of Year 4 have been inquiring into….. drum roll please… how beliefs, values and traditions bring people together. The curious learners in 4 Zadie and 4 Kimmi have been open-minded, reflective, and knowledgeable whilst exploring a range of celebrations and commemorations.
Our research was guided by questioning what our celebration or commemoration was like, why is it celebrated and how it is connected to other things we already know about.
We shared our research by presenting our chosen celebration or commemoration in an around the world format. We travelled to India, Lebanon, Italy and so many other countries all in one afternoon! We did not just stop at research, we even created props which represented symbols related to celebrations and commemorations we were studying. It definitely made us hungry before lunch! ELC to Year 3, boy you have something to look forward to! Years Five and Six, we bet you want to go back in time.
If you don't believe us here's what some Year 4 have to say:
• “I learnt that other countries celebrate Easter differently” – Matilda (4 Kimmi)
• “I enjoyed answering questions” – Mia (4 Kimmi)
• “Saint Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in America” – Emily W (4 Zadie)
• “I learnt that the Day of the Dead is a celebration and a commemoration” – Emma (4 Zadie)

Exciting New Program - 'Power Hour' Swim Squad Program

Private Lessons available during Afternoon Program
We now have the capability to offer our students one on one lessons. Spots are limited and all students will require an assessment prior to booking in.
For further information, please email swimming@tara.nsw.edu.au
Winter Swimming Special
To help promote the importance of swimming over the winter months we are offer a 50% discount off the 2nd lesson you enrol in, during the months of June, July, and August. This special is for ALL levels except private, semi-private, and adult lessons.
While the idea of swimming lessons often loses its appeal during these cooler months, it’s important to remember that water safety is a year-round concern and the dangers of water do not disappear when the weather gets colder.
There is a misconception that children who attend swimming lessons during winter are more prone to colds and the flu. In fact, regular exercise such as swimming can help to boost your child’s immunity. Children who continue with year round swimming lessons progress quicker than those who don’t and taking a break can often cause a regression of skills and depletion of water confidence. Skills that are learnt can continue to be consolidated and advanced, rather than catching up later in the year. Continuing swimming lessons through winter will ensure all the time and money you have invested is not wasted over the winter months.

AFL in PE
This term, our AFL unit with Year 6 students has been a standout highlight within our Physical Education program. Collaborating with GWS development coaches, our students were introduced to the fundamental skills of AFL, igniting a newfound enthusiasm for the game.
Throughout the unit, our girls have not only honed their abilities in handpassing, kicking, defending, and attacking but have also embraced the diverse roles within the sport. From mastering the art of shepherding to understanding the strategy of gameplay, each student has grown in both knowledge and passion for AFL.
One student, Andrea, beautifully encapsulates the sentiments shared by many, expressing, "I have learned a lot of things like handpassing, kicking, defending, attacking, and being a shepherd when the opposition tried to tag your teammate." Andrea's reflection highlights the multifaceted nature of AFL and the invaluable lessons it imparts beyond the field.
Through focused instruction and practice, students have not only refined their skills but have also gained a deeper understanding of the skill required in AFL gameplay. Students wishing to continue their love of AFL can play in a Tara team in Term 3 Saturday Sport.
Celebrating Success at Our Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals!
We’ve just wrapped up two of the most exhilarating events on our school calendar – the Swimming Carnival and the Cross Country Carnival. With the splash of the water and the pound of the pavement, our students showcased their talents, sportsmanship, and, above all, their house spirit.
Let’s start with our Swimming Carnival, an event that truly made waves in our hearts. Held in our brand new Tara Aquatic Centre, the atmosphere was electric from the moment the first whistle blew. Students, parents, and teachers gathered around the pool, cheering on their peers with enthusiasm.
It was a day filled with excitement, as swimmers dashed through the water, pushing themselves to achieve personal bests and surpass their own expectations.
A special shout out goes to all the parents who joined their daughters in the Parent Daughter Relay, adding an extra layer of joy and pride to the event.
Congratulations to our Tara Swimming Team who represented our school with pride at the IPSHA Swimming Carnival in March at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Chelsea X, Tracy C, Rebecca Z, Felicity H, Jessica L, Mia X, Jacquleine Z, Emma K, Bella H, Ella Y, Lucinda F, Chanel T, Joanna X, Cynthia F, Alicia L, Scarlett H, Anneliese M, Francesca B and Zoe O.
This year we had three athletes progress through to compete at the CIS carnival. A huge congratulations to Chelsea, Rebecca and Joanna – what an achievement!
Following the splash of success at the Swimming Carnival, our athletes in Years 3 to 6 traded their swim caps for running shoes as they took on the challenge of the Cross Country Carnival. With determination etched on their faces, our students tackled every hill and curve with grit and determination.
Once again, house spirit was in full force, as students adorned in their house colours dashed across the finish line, cheered on by their peers and supporters.
The Cross Country Carnival was not just a test of physical endurance but a celebration of individual success. It reminded us that success is not only measured by ribbons, but by the courage to push boundaries and strive for personal bests.
Congratulations to our Tara Cross Country team who will compete at the IPSHA Carnival. We wish our Tara team all the best as the represent our School at this carnival - Felicity, Tracy, Divanya, Crystal, Jacqueline, Sophia, Hannah, Paru, Chanel, Jana, Linlin, Aaren, Nicole, Lorin, Madeleine, Sanche and Scarlett.
Our individual and house champions for both swimming and cross country will be awarded at the awards assembly at the end of the term.
Golf in Year 2
Year 2 in PE this term have been inquiring into push and pull forces and striking for accuracy or power, with a focus on golf. Equipped with new golf equipment, our students have had the opportunity to refine their striking skills with precision and strength. As the unit progressed, it was evident that our Year 2 students have become true pros on the green.
As the school holidays approach, we encourage Year 2 parents to consider putt putt or mini golf as a fun and engaging activity for their children. With their newfound skills and enthusiasm, our Year 2 students are more than ready to take on the challenge and showcase their prowess on the course.

Dignity Dishes
Judy Cropper - Head of Food Technology/Hospitality | VET Compliance Officer
Dignity Dishes (making meals for the disadvantaged) has had a productive and enjoyable Term 1. We have made 280 meals this term which contributes to the 1900 we have prepared since we started this service activity in March 2022.
Thank you to the girls from Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 who have enthusiastically attended after school, to cook the meals. Thank you also to Marisa S and Suhanya J for organising the rosters, Mrs Napier for purchasing the food and delivering the meals and Ms Lachet for her caring and outstanding assistance in the food production.
I continue to be amazed at the enthusiasm and care of all concerned with this service activity and we look forward to continuing in Terms 2, 3 and 4 this year
Year 11 SRC Easter Hampers
International Women's Day is a day for everyone to join together and share the message of equal rights for women. An initiative led by Year 11 SRC, Tara had a fundraiser selling a variety of baked goods, fairy floss and purple ribbons for all students across the Senior School. All together, we had sales of over $1000.
With this money, we had great delight in making multiple hampers filled with generous items such as brand new blankets, children’s clothing and of course Easter eggs. They were delivered to the Parramatta Women's Shelter on Maundy Thursday.
Year 11 Geography Fieldtrip to Marrickville
Samantha, Assya, Veronika, Claire and Carol - Year 11 students
On Thursday, the Year 11 Geography class made their way to Marrickville to conduct fieldwork on cultural change. Marrickville is a fascinating suburb to study as it had a rich history, diverse culture, evident in the cuisines available, and lots of recent developments to the suburb, indicating gentrification. We navigated our way to Marrickville using public transport, where we met our guide for the day.
We began exploring the streets: observing the architecture, people, key monuments, and street art exhibited throughout Marrickville, and learnt the cultural characteristics of the suburb. From there, we learnt several fieldwork techniques to assist us in gathering primary sources; to further understand the correlation between culture and place. Throughout the day, we partook in urban drifting, random point sampling, and re-photography – all of which were applicable to our own research investigations.
To completely immerse ourselves in the culture of Marrickville, we indulged in the Vietnamese cuisine, and visited several Asian food markets and restaurants and Greek bakeries and cafes. To end the day, we collected an additional form of primary data, by interviewing the locals, visitors, and business owners in Marrickville.
Overall, it was a worthwhile experience, where we gained skills in undertaking key fieldwork techniques that will help us in our future Geographical Investigation.

Legal Studies leads to LAW and Life-Long Learning
Angelina and Assya - Year 11 students
In our legal studies lesson we were fortunate enough to have Tara Old Girls Charis Zacharias and Alana Khattar come in from the University of Wollongong to speak to us about life beyond Tara. As law students they gave us words of wisdom into what it takes to be a law student, their favourite and least favourite parts about it and their high school life, doing their HSC amongst the middle of the COVID lockdown period. They also told us a little about their personal opinions on law, like what they will do in the future, their most fascinating cases, what the hardest part is and how different the work is from Year 11 to Year 12. Throughout this experience the class was able to grasp a different perspective on how valuable our subject choices are, but they don’t define us. Charis also provided great advice about the importance of balancing work with other social aspects of our lives and how important it is to do that when you can, particularly as a law student. As a class we found this super beneficial as we begin to further our legal studies, leadership and soon Year 12.

IGSA Swimming
Skye A - Swimming Captain
On Friday 22 March, the Tara swimming team competed at the 99th IGSA carnival! The atmosphere of the IGSA competition was intense, with swim teams from various schools attending. In the lead up to preparing ourselves for the IGSA swim competition, in training sessions we would focus on refining our techniques, building endurance, and perfecting our starts and turns.
The day started off with a bang with our relay teams swimming exceptionally well in their events. The races throughout the day were fun and intense but what made it better was our supportive School team on the side line. Many girls made the finals including Skye A, Tatum G and Pare N in which they competed in again at the end of the day. Although this is hard to do, the girls bounced back and competed exceptionally well in the finals.
Well done and congratulations to all girls who competed in the IGSA swimming carnival and thank you to all staff who helped make this day happen, leading to the great success of our swimmers!
Sarah S has been selected in the 200 Butterfly to represent IGSA at CIS. Congratulations Sarah!

Badminton
Aoling Z - Badminton Captain
Round 7
For some, our last training sessions complete, a few Seniors say sad goodbyes to their last ever season of Saturday Sport in their HSC preparations, while many Juniors look forwards to explore new areas of athletic interest - whether that may be in Badminton or otherwise. These last two seasons has seen the dedication and pique of serious interest in Badminton, as one of Tara’s largest Saturday Sports – with over 114 individuals, including staff and students, involved in the training, organising and competing of games. Nearly half our teams have made it to finals week. There is much realised and unrealised potential in many players in this sport and I implore that they continue to explore Badminton outside of School. I implore especially Juniors, that they continue to revisit this Sport outside of school and aim for excellence – that they may return to Term 4 with new insight to apply to their interschool peers. Regardless of skill, I applaud the consistent integrity in sportsmanship, players upheld during this season.
“This week our team will be competing in the finals; I am so proud of my teammates and myself for playing this term and getting into the finals. Thanks to my team for getting us there and having so much confidence in me, well done all the teams that played this term” - Kavya S. K (Year 7 TAR26)
“Playing badminton at Tara has been a pleasure, it was actually my first sport at Tara!! I think it’s a fun way to spend time with your friends. My teammates, Toby W, Alis K and Pheobe C, and I tried our best at every game, and it felt rewarding when we won the match, even if we lost, frequently. Overall badminton was a great experience, would love to do Badminton in Term 4, if I could" - Jennifer Y (Year 12 TAR05)
“My games were so fun, my team mates Lareina and Kavya played very well.” – Elma L (Year 7 TAR26)
“I had so much fun playing badminton this term. It was my last year playing badminton at Tara and I really enjoyed and cherished the memories I’ve made. The coaches were super supportive, and my teammates were all fun to play doubles with. I feel like my skills in badminton has increased tremendously.” – Monica Z (Year 12 TAR01)

OP2 Tara 2 vs Loreto Normanhurst 2, Win
Last weekend the Tar01 and Tar02 softball teams played in the grand final for their divisions! Both teams played one of their best games all season, resulting in both being the SOFTBALL CHAMPIONS of their division!!
Tess M starred as the pitcher, keeping the opposition from scoring! The TAR01 team also showed off all their batting practice from the season, with some big hits from all the players. Notably, Sophia S, Inika N and Maleeha B were star batters! Finally, the team did an amazing job fielding, with Naomi N quick in the outfield to stop players from coming home, and Elizabeth G putting pressure on the opposition at third base. Overall, the team did an amazing job, allowing them to finish their time playing softball at Tara with an amazing game.
The Senior Seconds also played their best game, with managing to get three out in a row nearly every single innings. This was thanks to Ellie H and Danbi S from Year 10 in shortstop and first base, where Ellie would throw a strong and flat ball to Danbi.

Ella and her horse Ranger took part in two classes: 'Youth Handler' and '2 horses owned by same owner,' alongside her other Clydesdale, "Huey." Despite tough competition, Ella secured 3rd and 2nd place in the respective classes!
More recently, at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Ella and Ranger impressed by achieving 5th place among a highly competitive group of 10 top Youth Handlers in the country.
We couldn't be prouder of her accomplishments. Ella exhibited exceptional horsemanship, navigating Ranger with grace amidst the bustling atmosphere of such a grand event, and received commendations from the judging panel.
