Term 1, Week 9, 2020
From the Deputy Principal | Head of Senior School
Getting into the Rhythm of the Year
The middle of Term 1 always seems to be a point at which students and teachers settle into the rhythm of the year. Perhaps it’s the end of summer that signals time to ‘get on with it’, but I think that it’s more that most have slipped into the routine of each day and week. I suspect it might also be that way for families as activities and commitments start to clarify and who does what is negotiated. Though I also know that as soon as you think it’s all sorted, something comes along to blow it up. Still happens, even with children in their twenties…but I digress.
At Tara, the imperative for teachers to know their students is forefront in our minds at the start of the year. January Staff Development Days are dominated by time sharing knowledge and wisdom with each other about students, analysing data and past Academic Reports and Mentor Comments to know where each student is in their development as learners, knowing their particular strengths and needs, and once in the classroom getting an appreciation of who they are as young people, what makes them tick and how to get the best out of them. While this takes some time, usually by mid-Term 1 everyone is well into the rhythm of teaching and learning, juggling study and cocurricular programs.
That isn’t to say that there aren’t some exciting big events for Tara students this Term. Year 7 have already been on camp and have enjoyed getting to know each other, their Year Coordinator Mrs Madigan, Assistant Year Coordinator Ms Jung, and their Mentors. Year 9 are preparing for their Duke of Edinburgh camp at the end of Term, and Year 10 are busy starting to plan for future careers and university pathways. There has already been an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB DP) Information Evening run by Mrs Fairfax, our IB DP Coordinator. As well as preparation for Work Experience and Careers Assessment and workshops later in the Term when they can start to consider their interests, passions, and aptitude. This will lead into a HSC Information and Subject Selection Evening in Term 2, run by Mr Bonson (Dean of Learning 11-12) giving students the opportunity to weigh up the option of HSC or IB DP and start making decisions on courses. It’s an exciting time to be a Tara student.
As the numerous big exciting events roll through though, for all students, developing positive habits is paramount. Being prepared for each day. Keeping up with classwork. Completing homework. Revising and creating study notes. Completing sample responses to questions for teachers to mark and provide feedback. Planning for Assessment Tasks. Exercising. Eating well. Spending time with friends and family. Resting. The very best students at Tara do all of this as the routine and rhythm of their days, weeks, months, years at school…getting on with it.

International Women's Day
International Women’s Day 2025
For over a century, International Women’s Day (IWD) has championed gender equality. First proposed by Clara Zetkin in 1910, it began as a call for women’s rights and has since become a global celebration of achievements and a platform for change. From Australia’s first IWD rally in 1928, demanding equal pay, to the Women’s Liberation marches of the 1970s, IWD continues to unite generations in the pursuit of progress.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended our inaugural International Women’s Day breakfast celebration with a morning of inspiration, reflection, and connection. Our International Women’s Day Breakfast set the tone for a day filled with empowering conversations, as students, staff, and special guests gathered to honour the achievements of women and the ongoing journey toward gender equality.
We were privileged to hear from two remarkable guest speakers.
Erebi Cocodia, a dedicated Tara mum and experienced engineer in the energy industry, plays a vital role with the Offshore Regulator, driving technological advancements, shaping policy, and improving resource management in the petroleum sector. As a member of the United Nations Expert Committee for Resource Management, Erebi encouraged us to push beyond our perceived limits, embrace confidence and curiosity, and approach life with purpose. She reminded us to believe in ourselves, keep learning, and take risks fearlessly.
Professor Catharine Lumby from the University of Sydney highlighted the power of friendship and the importance of leading with compassion. She reminded us that empathy is a cornerstone of women's strength and encouraged us to bring kindness into everything we do.
Thank you for being part of this memorable celebration.
Following on from the breakfast Senior School SRC hosted a sausage sizzle at lunch, bringing students and staff together in a spirit of camaraderie and appreciation for the power of women uplifting one another.
This year’s celebrations were a powerful reminder of our commitment to empowering young women to lead with confidence and compassion. As we reflect on the incredible women who have paved the way, we also look to the future—supporting, encouraging, and championing each other every step of the way.
Let’s continue marching forward together!

Tara Alumnae
United Nations Visit
Tara Old Girl Inika Narayan (Class of 2024) has taken her passion for leadership and advocacy to the world stage at the United Nations (UN) in New York. She recently had the incredible opportunity to observe the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)—the largest annual gathering dedicated to advancing women’s rights and gender equality globally.
As a Youth Ambassador for Zonta Parramatta, Inika is deeply engaged in discussions on gender equality and women’s empowerment—a passion she first explored in Legal Studies at Tara. The CSW plays a critical role in shaping global standards for gender equality, and Inika’s experience at the UN has given her an invaluable perspective on international advocacy and leadership.
Reflecting on her time at Tara, Inika encourages current students to embrace every opportunity that comes their way. She believes that participation in activities such as the World Vision Christmas Markets, Student Representative Council (SRC), Dignity Dishes, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award can lead to incredible future opportunities.
“Small steps lead to extraordinary possibilities,” Inika shares.
Her journey from studying the role of the UN in Legal Studies to witnessing its work in action is a testament to the power of curiosity, commitment, and leadership. We are incredibly proud of Inika and look forward to seeing where her passion for advocacy takes her next.
Congratulations, Inika, on this remarkable achievement!

IPSHA Swimming and Diving Carnival
Our Junior girls had an incredible day at the annual IPSHA Swimming and Diving Carnival!
The girls gave it their all in the pool, competing with skill and determination across a variety of events. The energy was electric as they cheered each other on, embodying true team spirit and sportsmanship.
A special congratulations to Chelsea X (Year 3), who delivered an exceptional performance and has qualified for the CIS Championships in both the 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly—a remarkable achievement! Additionally, we acknowledge Rebecca Z (Year 4) for her fantastic effort in the 50m Butterfly, where she placed 7th overall.
We are incredibly proud of all our swimmers for their hard work and dedication. Well done, girls!
Junior School Cross Country
The Junior School Cross Country Carnival was a fantastic showcase of determination, resilience, and school spirit as our Years 3 to 6 students took on the challenge of the course winding through both the Junior and Senior Schools.
From the starting line to the final stretch, the girls ran with enthusiasm, pushing themselves to achieve their best. House pride was evident as students cheered each other on, offering encouragement and support to their peers along the way. The event highlighted the strength of the Tara community, with every girl embracing the challenge and celebrating one another’s achievements.
Congratulations to all our runners for their incredible efforts and thank you to the staff and supporters who helped make the day such a success. Well done, girls!

Return and Earn Initiative
Popi T - Environment Prefect
Last year, the Environment Committee began the Return and Earn initiative at Tara. This consisted of recycling all bottles, cans, and Poppers collected from Tara and then donating the returns to World Vision and Return and Earn. The Environment Committee ended up donating over 2000 bottles over the course of the year!
This year we are re-doing Return and Earn and plan to donate even more bottles as more buckets have been placed around the School in the Colonnade, locker areas, and in Junior School. The money raised will be donated to WIRES, Australia's largest wildlife rescue organisation as we plan to participate in an initiative later this year where girls will make kangaroo pouches and possum shelters for the animals rescued.
Thank you all for your participation in Return and Earn!
Year 12 Geography Fieldtrip
On Monday, the Year 12 Geography class made their way to Barangaroo, to study urban places. Barangaroo was an intriguing precinct to study, since had a rich history, home to the Gadigal people, and has since become a world leading example of sustainability. We navigated our way to Barangaroo using public transport and witnessed the myriad of ways we could have travelled there, such as the new Barangaroo Metro. We met our guide for the day and commenced our fieldwork.
We began with South Barangaroo by observing the infrastructure, people and key locations throughout Barangaroo. We collected primary data by observing Wulugul Walk and surveying residents, workers and visitors of the area to gain a variety of perspectives on the positive and negative implications of the economic hub. Throughout the day, we partook in measuring the windspeed, surface temperature and noise intensity of Central Barangaroo, as well as measuring the carbon storage of the 10,000 trees planted in the precinct to understand Barangaroo’s responses to environmental concerns.
To completely immerse ourselves in the lifestyle of Barangaroo, we indulged in the biggest Yochi store in the world, and walked through The Crown Hotel, appreciating its economic and social significance to the precinct. Overall, it was a valuable experience, where we gained skills in undertaking primary fieldwork techniques that will assist us in future studies.
Dignity Dishes
Dignity Dishes Visit
Mrs Cropper & Mrs Napier - Food Technology Department
Tara Senior School was fortunate enough to have Mrs Sherin Fishwick (National Partnerships Manager at Dignity) as our guest speaker at assembly to address our girls.
Some of the stories she shared were quite overwhelming. Age does not discriminate with over 122,000 people homeless and 3 million people are living below the poverty line in Australia. The need is so great within our immediate community that in some instances the Dignity freezers empty within an hour of the meals being delivered by volunteers.
We were also very pleased to learn that the founder and CEO of Dignity, Suzanne Hopman, is an ex-TARA parent and had her daughters attend the school. (https://youtu.be/d0O-6yBG6EU)
We continue to value all the students (and staff) who sign up each fortnight to support Dignity, we could not do it without them. It is a valuable service activity that we run here at Tara, and after the presentation at assembly, we now know that we DO make a difference!
Dignity Dishes Bake Sale Success!
Jalina X - Social Justice Prefect
Over the past few weeks, Tara girls have come together as a community through Dignity Dishes—a wonderful initiative where students volunteer their time to cook meals for those in need. A huge thank you to Mrs Cropper for organising these sessions and guiding the students in making a tangible difference.
Additionally, to help fund future sessions, a bake sale was held at recess on Wednesday, 12 March. Year 11 students volunteered their time and effort, baking an assortment of treats to sell. Thanks to their hard work and the support of our School community, we raised over $800, enough to sustain Dignity Dishes at Tara for more than a semester.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed—whether by cooking, baking, or supporting the bake sale. Your generosity is truly making a difference!

The morning began with the excitement of our rowers boarding the bus from Tara to SIRC, reminiscent of rowing camp days.
A blessing from Dr Isaacs set a positive tone and as the semifinals kicked off, our team showed remarkable commitment. Mr Bandola ensured our rowers were well-fuelled with a delicious meal ahead of the finals, and it was inspiring to see our community come together to support our seniors in the final races of the very long day.
A quick summary of the regatta:
- Rowers: 41
- Races: 14 (with 5 finals)
- Medals: Bronze in the School Girl 4+ by Hannah R, Olivia B, Gemma W, Amy R, and Tamika T (Coach Mr Crampton and supported by, Mr Board, and Ms Brienesse)

Round 4
S03 Tara 1 vs Frensham 1, Loss, 5-8
J03 Tara 2 vs Frensham 4, Loss, 10-6
Y703 Tara 3 vs Queenwood 9, Win, 24-4
TAR01:
In the early hours of Saturday morning, our Senior 1sts team faced Frensham in a challenging match. The team implemented skills and strategies from training, showcasing improved ball movement, positioning, and strategic field use. Lucy T had a standout performance, scoring several impressive goals through strong defensive pressure. Her ball control was very secure and played a key role in defence. Lia N at centre forward, was effectively drawing multiple defenders while handling intense pressure. Despite this, she managed to score some remarkable goals. Orla A demonstrated excellent game awareness through strong defensive and offensive play while helping efficient ball movement up the field. Grace T played a well-rounded game, delivering solid defence and attack, whilst displaying leadership in guiding and motivating the team throughout the game. Saanvi B played an excellent game as goalkeeper blocking a penalty and many other shots from the other team. A great effort from the entire team despite the tough competition!
TAR03:
Our Year 7 team had another outstanding win this week against Queenwood. We put into action many of our skills we learnt in training such as fouls and our set ups. Some girls who performed well this week were Anneliese M, who quickly swam down the pool with the ball to get many strong, successful goals. Bella Z, Bella L and Ruby L also did a great job by scoring goals and intercepting the ball. We are still focusing on specific areas to improve for the rest of the season.
Round 5
S03 Tara 1 vs Kambala 1, Loss, 4-11
J03 Tara 2 vs St Vincents 5, Win, 14-6
Y703 Tara 3 vs PLC Sydney 7, Loss, 10-12
Touch Football
Ellie H - Touch Football Captain
Round 4
- S03 Tara 1 vs Frensham 3, Loss, 2-5
- S07 Tara 2 vs Frensham 7, Loss, 1-10
- J02 Tara 3 vs Frensham 9, Loss, 2-7
- J07 Tara 4 vs Wenona 21, Win, 7-0
All touch football teams had great games against all other Frensham teams. They were actively supporting each other, watching all the games and cheering their players on.
Within the TAR02 game, it was another great game to watch. Special mentions to Heeya P (Year 12) and Georgia H (Year 12) who had great passing and defence skills throughout the whole game, setting up plays such as quickies and dummies. Also, Ivy K (Year 9) had a great attacking game, she made some great distance in many of her runs.
The Junior firsts also had a great game, where it is definitely evident that they are improving and growing as a team, also with the help of their coach Miss Khadi. Three players who performed well throughout the whole game were Angie K (Year 9), Lara K (Year 9) and Cleo F (Year 9). They worked together well, passed the ball around quickly and pressured the other team during their defence line. Great work girls!
Round 5
- S03 Tara 1 vs Ravenswood 2, Draw, 1-1
- S07 Tara 2 vs Roseville 6, Loss, 2-10
- J02 Tara 3 vs Ravenswood 9, Draw, 5-5
- J07 Tara 4 vs Wenona 20, Win, 4-0
On the touch football fields in Round 5, it is very clear that the girls have been using trainings well and working together well as a team. This is seen in their games, as the passing between one another is more accurate, more plays and skills have been incorporated, and girls are more familiar with the quick pace of the game.
A highlight this week is on the TAR01 team. The girls are improving in their new plays, including ones known as box sets, quickies, scoops and roosters. These are being played more in the games to help them get more runs on the field and to score. In particular, Popi T (Year 12) had both good attacking and defending skills, even running through many players in the middle of the field to score their try.
Softball
Ellie H - Softball Captain
Round 4
S02 Tara 1 vs Loreto Normanhurst 2, Win, 21-2
J01 Tara 2 vs Pymble 2, Win, 12-4
The TAR01 had an amazing game and a massive win over the weekend. We are using our trainings well to work on improving our quick plays and accurate throws to speed the game up and pressure the opposing teams. On the weekend, Danbi S’s (Year 11) base to base throwing and catching was so accurate that she caught two people out and threw the ball to other bases to contribute to double out plays. On the batting side, we had some great hits by Aarya R (Year 10) and Bella S (Year 10), as well as some impressive base to base running from Keira C (Year 11), making it home and scoring the 7 runs for that innings!
The Junior softball team also had a moving game, especially as they are getting quicker in their fielding and more accurate in their batting. Navya N (Year 7) and Karissa L (Year 7) had remarkable hits during their batting, and Ashleigh F (Year 9) on first base and Aura G (Year 7) as catcher caught numerous balls and caught many people out from the opposing team, making their fielding half of the innings very quick!
Round 5
S02 Tara 1 vs Loreto Normanhurst 4, Win, 18-7
J01 Tara 2 vs Abbotsleigh 3, Loss, 5-15
TAR01 played very well this week with another good win. In the first innings, we caught three people out within the first two minutes of our fielding, following by the maximum seven home to complete the innings. For the second innings, we continued to do well, especially in our batting. Finally for the third innings, we had another three straight out, and we finished with an excellent fielding. Special mention to Lucinda M (Year 10) and Danbi S (Year 11) for their batting, and base to base running, making it home many times.
For TAR02, despite the score not reflecting this, their team played very well and worked together well in their throwing and catching. They cheered each other on well when batting as well. In particular when fielding, Victoria H (Year 9) and Bianca Y (Year 9) worked together in their roles as pitcher and catcher, maintaining a quick pace throughout the game, and playing excellently. Well done girls!

Round 4
In Round 4, the Badminton teams worked efficiently in both their training and games, continuing to achieve outstanding results!
Tara 3, consisting of Fiona B, Sienna L, Claire M, and Elaine W from Year 10, played a challenging match in a higher division. Despite this, the team secured an impressive 5-0 victory! Most of the members had the opportunity to play both singles and doubles, performing exceptionally well. During their doubles, the girls quickly determined their positions and worked well together.
The junior teams also delivered an impressive performance. Specifically, the girls from Tara 16, consisting of Sandy H, Lindy S, Renee W, and Vicky Z from Year 9, excelled with powerful smashes and quick hits, making it difficult for the opposing team to return the shuttle.

In Round 5, Tara 5, consisting of Jessica K, Lydia S, Eva T, and Ellisa Y from Year 12, played an exciting match at Tara, securing a 3-2 win. Throughout their training sessions, they had worked together, practicing their coordination and strategy as they would in the actual game. At the end, it was great to see their hard work pay off, especially as they demonstrated their fast-paced rallies and maintained a fun energy on the court. Although the points were closely contested, the game was exciting to watch, and the results were just as we had hoped!
In the junior division, Tara 24, made up of Grace Y, Aileen Y, Leila Z, and Eva Z from Year 8, delivered another outstanding performance with a dominant 5-0 victory, also at Tara. Their exceptional teamwork demonstrated how preparation and collaboration helped them achieve the best scores in the game!
We hope that the badminton girls will continue to learn new techniques and build meaningful connections, creating strong teamwork to win more of their games.

Tara Rowing Wrap Up
The Tara Rowing season concluded with outstanding achievements and strong team spirit. The season began with a victory at the Sisters Bay Cup regatta, a testament to the hard work and dedication of our rowers.
Beyond competition, key initiatives supported athlete development. A nutrition presentation educated rowers on fuelling their bodies for peak performance, while the Year 6 Learn to Row program introduced younger students to the sport in a supportive environment. Additionally, the Senior Sculling Camp at St Georges River provided an intensive training experience, allowing our senior athletes to fine-tune their technique, work on race strategies, and strengthen their endurance.
A major highlight from this season was the addition of the Adele Ramsay to our fleet. The boat is proudly named in honour of Principal Adele Ramsay, symbolising the hard work, passion and dedication that drive our rowing community. The Adele Ramsay boat secured its first medal at the IGSA Regatta, marking the beginning of its promising journey in competition.
The season culminated at the Schoolgirl Head of the River, where despite challenging weather conditions, the team demonstrated resilience, determination, and unwavering support for one another. Tara rowers delivered strong performances, highlighted by a well-earned medal in the Schoolgirl Four.
Tara Rowing continues to grow, thanks to the commitment of our rowers, coaches, and community. We look forward to building on this momentum and achieving even greater success next season.
